What is Non Woven Wallpaper

Non Woven Wallpaper refers to the under or reverse side of the wallpaper that sticks to the wall. Typically, this backing would be made from fabric such as vinyl.

However, 'non-woven' is paper backed and made from a combination of natural and synthetic fibres. The same fibres which are used for making gauze, coffee filters and teabags.

The natural fibres usually consist of cellulose which is a substance found in plant cells which keeps the plant strong. The cellulose for non-woven wallpapers is obtained from wood.

Ever since non-woven wallpaper was introduced about a decade ago, it has gained popularity with designers and quickly established itself as the preferred substrate  of many wallpaper collections.

Benefits of Non Woven Wallpaper
Easier to install and remove

With our non-woven paper, the paste is applied directly to the wall instead of the paper. This makes it quicker and easier to hang as you don't have to deal with long strips of pasted and sticky paper. Wet paper is harder to accurately join and bubbles can form more easily.

Since non-woven paper is stronger, even when it is wet, it retains it's shape.

Easy to install and easy to remove. Gone are the days of scraping off old wallpaper that's stuck to the walls as non-woven is dry strippable.

Breathable

The composition of breathable fibres means air can pass through and moisture isn't locked in-between the paper and the wall, eliminating the risk of mould forming.

Wallpaper itself does not cause mould - however the old manufacturing of the substrate meant that the paper was unable to "breathe"  locking vapours between it and the wall.

More environmentally friendly

Non-woven paper contains no vinyl unless the wallpaper specifically has a PVC coating.Vinyl manufacturing is very hard on the environment due to the chemicals released in the atmosphere.

Non-woven manufacturing has a significantly lower carbon footprint. It is not 100% natural since its makeup contains synthetic fibres but these materials are far less taxing on the environment.

In our case, water based inks are used. This is a kinder way to print onto the wallpaper as there are no harmful chemicals used compared to solvent based inks. Modern digital printing techniques also means there is no ink wastage.

Dense and durable

The blend of natural and synthetic fibres creates a strong material that is tear resistant and can be wiped clean with a damp sponge. It is sturdy and long-lasting.

Types of Non Woven Wallpaper

Traditional Wallpaper

One of the most popular type. Can be single (simplex) or double (duplex) layered. Cellulose is the main component of the product. They are very ecological, they let walls breathe, therefore they are widely used for bedrooms (children bedrooms especially) and dining rooms. They are very affordable and accessible, can be literary found in any design store. However, the colours fade away in the sun, and they are not washable. Some of the wallpapers are less resistant to moist, therefore it is hard to apply them to a wall without washing away some of the colour or them being stretched. Most of iconic "William Morris" and "Sanderson" wallpapers are made of cellulose.

Vinyl Wallpaper

A very popular type of wallpapers. They consist of a backing layer, paper or fibre, and a plastic upper coating. Their practical day to day advantages are obvious: they are washable, light- resistant, relatively cheap and extremely durable which makes them the ideal candidate of frequently used rooms (kitchens, dining rooms, bathrooms). Should only be changed every 10–20 years. Vinyl wallpapers vary greatly in colour and pattern, they can imitate wood, stone, concrete, etc. However, they do not allow the walls to breathe, they might extract toxic fumes, so they should not be used in bedrooms and badly ventilated spaces. Because of their “artificial” nature, you either love it or hate it.

Embossed Wallpaper

Textured and embossed wallpapers add depth and an interesting contrast to plain walls. The textures can range from delicate and soft fabric inspired imprints through to dramatic geometrics. The most popular colours are cream, stone and taupe as these create a wonderful natural palette which can co-ordinate with most other accent and feature colours. Embossed wallpaper can hide the wall defects: scratches, cracks and wall roughness in general. They can be painted over. Disadvantages are its hard to glue them right (cause with time the edges start to bend and stratify), it is also hard to peel them off the wall, also by removing the embossed wallpaper, you risk to damage the plastering.

How To Paste Non Woven Wallpaper

to prepare the walls: They must be smooth. Otherwise, the pattern on the wallpaper edges will not be beautiful. Some small imperfections are ok as Non-woven Wallpaper got hte ability to hide some small bumps and small walls cracks.
make sure your walls are dry: Then you can prime. Primer is requiring that dust will be removed before. When you are priming walls these walls will absorb less glue. This means that the wallpaper and the wall surface will be better "stuck" to each other. Also, primering the walls will help you to safe your time and energy when you will decide to remove your wallpaper in the future. So it is better to prime. Our Unique Wallpaper glue is designed for any Wallpaper type and it is also a primer.

measuring:  For this it is necessary to measure the height of the wall. Work with each wall separately. If you want to add a decorative strip or a border on the upper edge of the wallpaper, the height should be measured from the floor to the border. If no - then measure till the ceiling.
Next, you need to measure 1 meter from the corner of the wall, from which we start to work. At a distance of 1 meter it is necessary to fix the tape with a heavy bolt on the end or just use a level, so we can get a strict vertical stripe. Now it is possible to apply the paste. For Non-woven wallpaper, you will need a special glue or a universal one!
pasting: Pay attention to the wall and wallpaper stripe and make sure that you will hang it 90 degrees to the floor. Don't look at the corner of the room and don't hang your wallpaper according to that line and angle, since sometimes the walls are not really straight and all other stripes that you will hang will be not straight and will look bad and even badder as you move to the other corner. That's why we are using the level. If your level is showing that the corner of your room is not straight and it is not 90 degrees to the floor, then you will need to hang your wallpaper stripe with the excess that you will need to cut later from the side where the corner is. That's the way you will achive a perfect straight line for the future measurings and as a guide line.

Applications of Non Woven Wallpaper

Wallpapering bookshelves

No matter what size or what room it's in, using wallpaper to decorate the back of a bookshelf is a very easy way to improve a room's decor. We recommend finding a patterned print that compliments either the color of the bookshelf or the overall paint color scheme in the room. If you have patterned walls, either paint or wallpaper, we recommend using a solid color for the bookshelf.

Fireplace feature wall

For those who are lucky enough to have a fireplace to get them through the winter months, fireplaces often have a wall that stretches out from the rest of the walls in the room. One easy way to improve the look & feel of your fireplace is to turn the walls into feature walls, using a print of wallpaper to contrast the paint or wallpaper throughout the rest of the room.

Framing wallpaper

Okay, this option is one of our favorite extraneous uses of wallpaper. Thankfully for you, it's also one of the easiest to do! It's simple: pick a few of your favorite prints, buy several small picture frames, then put different prints inside the picture frames. Arrange on your wall as you please, and voila! Again, this is one of the easiest ways to use wallpaper with endless combinations and possibilities!

Wallpaper for tabletop

You can look right past the expensive linen tablecloths and centerpieces for this decorating option. All you'll need is one of your favorite wallpaper prints and a measured pane of glass to achieve a luxurious look for your tabletop. Simply measure out a strip of wallpaper that's in line with your table and find a piece of glass to put over it.

Process of Non Woven Wallpaper

Manufacturing process of wallpapers involves using a wide variety of raw materials. Typically, wallpapers consist of a backing, applied ink, ground coat, and sometimes paste on the backing used for adhering paper to the wall. Non-woven backings are made of ground wood, wood pulp, or wood pulp combined with synthetic materials. Here is a brief summary of various raw materials used in the wallpapers manufacturing process.

Woven backings

Woven backings are made from some sturdy woven textile, such as drill . The woven backing is thereafter coated and printed. The background color laid on the surface is ground coat.

Ground coats

Most ground coats come with additives that help in enhancing the ease of drapability, handling, and opacity of the paper used in wallpaper. It receives the printed pattern.

Coatings/laminates

In addition to woven backing and ground coat, coatings, or laminates, are also used. They are made of vinyl or latex. The primary purpose here is to make the wallpaper more durable and strippable. The wallpaper is then printed with inks. A vehicle is also used to tie the ink with the backing of the wallpaper.

Solvents

The drying time and production time of a wallpaper between various color applications is dependent on the type of solvent used by the printer. For doing so, printers come with the capability of choosing from a number of solvents depending on the wallpaper requirements. Water and acetone are the most commonly used solvents.

Pastes

Pastes are optional raw materials used in the wallpaper manufacturing process. When used, they are applied drenched to the backing. Pastes are often made of cornstarch or wheat starch. Prepasted wallpapers are required to be soaked once more while adhering to the wall.

Product Precautions of Non Woven Wallpaper

Wallpapers installed on walls catch a lot of daily dirt and dust. Keeping your wallpaper clean is a key to maintaining its look, beauty and durability. Before knowing how to clean the wallpaper, it’s important for you to know what kind of wallpaper you have at you home. There are wallpapers that are washable, non-washable and scrubable. If you are not sure of its properties, using the cleaning steps on a piece of extra roll kept. No matter what grade is the wallpaper, you need to be very gentle to avoid tearing.

Vinyl based are easy to clean n maintain and it can be washed and cleant at home. You can dry dust vinyl based wallpaper using dry sponge or electrostatic dust cloth.

  • Firstly make a cleaning solution by adding few drops on hair shampoo to water. Use a sponge for cleaning the wallpaper. Be careful for not to use scrubbing pads because tey will tear the paper. Avoid using cloth as it will leave dirt of paper while re-using. If you intend to use cloth, make sure you use a clean cloth while working on wallpaper.
  • Squeeze out the excess solution as it will make the paper too wet n will result in tearing. Wipe the surface with the sponge, but make sure you do this in one direction only, preferably in vertical seams.
  • Use clean water every time you want to rinse the wallpaper. Do not use hot water for cleaning wallpaper. It can either be cold to warm water.
  • Wipe the wall with a terry-cloth towel after its washed. Dry the surface immediately after rinsing to prevent the wallpaper becoming too wet which will result in tearing.

Which Non-Woven Wallpaper Is Best?

The grammage and thickness of the material, the type of surface, cellulose from sustainable forestry and water-based printing inks are the main factors that ensure health-conscious quality.

productcate-470-408

01.Grammage and thickness of the material

Properties such as processing quality, living comfort, acoustic and thermal insulation or visual effect depend to a large extent on the grammage and material thickness of any nonwoven wallpaper. The surface weight (g/m 2 ) is the decisive factor when selecting a wallpaper for a specific purpose.

02.Smooth or structured surfaces

Surface types are primarily of aesthetic importance and are therefore influenced by personal taste. Delicate embossed structures create a high-quality visual effect. Smooth surfaces look sophisticated and are easier to paint. They require less paint and fewer brush strokes to achieve excellent results than structured surfaces.

03.Cellulose from sustainable forestry

The cellulose used for nonwoven wallpapers is obtained from wood. Wood is an important material, and its environmental protection and resource conservation are essential to ensure that this important raw material will remain available in the future. Sustainable forestry (FSC certification) refers to forests and plantations that are managed according to strict ecological and social principles. For example, only wood that can grow back can be taken.

04.Water-based inks for patterned wallpapers

Water-based dyes protect the environment and people's health. These light-resistant colors contain almost 50% water. Binders and colored pigments make up 20% each, organic solvents 5% and other reagents about 5%. Water-based dyes are increasingly used for patterned wallpapers due to their positive effects on people and the environment.
What is the difference between vinyl wallpaper and non-woven wallpaper?

Technically speaking, all layers of non-woven wallpaper are made up of cellulose and textile fibers. The differences between vinyl and non-woven wallpaper are the carrier material, moisture absorption capacity, cleaning properties and PVC content.

modular-1

Nonwoven wallpaper as carrier material

If the carrier layer is made of a non-woven material and coated with vinyl, it is often referred to as vinyl wallpaper, although it is also non-woven wallpaper in the broader sense. In the narrower sense, vinyl is only the surface coating and can also be applied to a paper-based carrier.

modular-2

Waterproof and Washable

Due to its synthetic surface, vinyl wallpaper is water resistant. In contrast to pure non-woven wallpapers, vinyl wallpapers do not absorb any moisture. These models can be cleaned very thoroughly and can usually be scrubbed. Nonwoven wallpapers can only be washed to a certain extent.

modular-3

Non-woven wallpapers do not contain PVC

Pure nonwoven wallpaper models do not contain PVC. vinyl, on the other hand, consists of polyvinyl chloride, which acts as a coating to form a sealed wallpaper surface that does not allow air or moisture to pass through. Nonwoven materials without vinyl coating are breathable and vapor permeable, i.e. the walls are not sealed and there is hardly any risk of mold.

What should I consider when applying non-woven wallpaper?

Nonwoven wallpaper is easy to apply and easy to remove again at a later date. After preparing the surface, the wallpaper paste is applied directly to the wall, then dry strips of wallpaper are laid on top of the paste and pressed on.

The raw material of the Metric Roller Chain Sprocket should ensure that the gear teeth have sufficient strength and wear resistance.Carbon steel, alloy steel, etc.are commonly used materials.

Prepare the surface: The surface must be smooth, even, dry, clean and bonded, and must be prepared with proper thoroughness. With light colored non-woven wallpaper substrates, the wall surface can be slightly visible and should therefore be treated with a tinted primer first.

Wall-pasting technique for wallpaper: Nonwoven wallpaper is applied directly to the wall on which it is pasted (wall-paste technique). In contrast to paper wallpaper, no pasting tape or soaking time is required. This is because nonwoven wallpaper neither swells when in contact with the paste nor shrinks again when it dries. It is absolutely dimensionally stable.

Pasting application with short pile rollers: Apply the paste evenly to the wall or ceiling, one strip at a time, with a short pile paste roller strip. An amount of paste slightly wider than the wallpaper strip should be used to ensure that the edges stay in place. In tricky corners and edges, a narrow paintbrush can be used.

Press the dry strips onto the damp adhesive: Gently press each pre-cut strip of dry wallpaper onto the damp adhesive, positioning it carefully and unfolding it downward. The first strip is aligned along the plumb line that should be drawn in advance. Then use a wallpaper brush to move any air bubbles from the middle of the wallpaper strip to the sides. The wallpaper roller and seam roller help to press on the wallpaper and seams.
