Linen Wallpaper: A New Biodegradable Eco-friendly Wallpaper

May 14, 2022

The most common wallpaper now is paper wallpaper or non-woven wallpaper. Waste paper wallpaper is relatively better and can be partially recycled, while non-woven wallpaper is made of synthetic fibers. Woven wallpaper can only be landfilled or incinerated, and cannot be recycled.

And even if it is paper wallpaper that can be partially recycled, various materials will be added during the manufacturing process, which will also lead to unenvironmental protection in its production process. When using, you need to use wallpaper glue to stick the wallpaper, and wallpaper glue is not an environmentally friendly decoration material, so in fact, there are very few types of paper wallpapers that can be recycled, and most of them are not suitable for recycling.

In addition to wallpaper, common wall decoration materials also include some wall coatings, latex paints, etc. The raw materials of these are basically synthetic resins, adhesives and pigments, and pollution will also occur during the production process, and they are not recyclable.

There is now an eco-friendly wallpaper, and its components are as follows:

●65% linen

●35% viscose fiber

●100% biodegradable

The main component of this wallpaper is flax fiber, which is the oldest textile fiber used by humans. The cultivation of flax is very water-efficient and does not produce any waste, and all by-products can also be used. And linen is also very suitable for the production of wallpaper because linen wallpaper has a bactericidal effect and is almost completely antistatic and anti-pollution.

But if the wallpaper consists entirely of flax fibers, it cannot stick to the wall, so flax wallpaper also needs to add a very important accessory - viscose fiber.

Although the name viscose may sound like a synthetic chemical, it is actually a textile fiber that can be made from wood.

This linen wallpaper is not only environmentally friendly, but also has the following advantages:

Sound absorption: Compared with ordinary wallpaper, linen wallpaper has stronger sound absorption ability, and can absorb most of the sound waves in the room, which can effectively reduce noise and play a sound insulation effect;

Thermal insulation: The thickness of linen wallpaper is generally 0.5 mm, and the weight is relatively light, so there will be a lot of air in the wallpaper, which has the effect of thermal insulation. The following is a demonstration of the thermal insulation effect of linen wallpaper through a thermal imager:

Insulation effect of linen wallpaper

On the left is a picture of the thermal imager with the palm pressed directly on the wall, and you can see that the heat dissipates rapidly;

On the right is the rendering of the palm pressed against the linen wallpaper, where the heat can be seen being retained on the wallpaper.

Adjust humidity: Because the main components of linen wallpaper are flax fiber and viscose fiber extracted from wood, it can adjust indoor humidity just like other plant fibers. When the air is humid, linen wallpaper can absorb part of the moisture, and when the indoor air is dry, it will release part of the moisture.

PS: Linen wallpaper is not suitable for use in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Long-term use in a relatively humid environment will cause mold and deterioration of linen wallpaper.

Durable: The physical properties of linen wallpaper are very stable, and the service life is longer than that of ordinary wallpaper.

Low Flammability: This wallpaper complies with the European fire classification standard EN 15102 + A1:2011, which means it can be used in various public places, offices or hotels.

No health threat to the body: As mentioned above, the raw materials of linen wallpaper are very environmentally friendly, with no other ingredients, and almost no chemical substances are added during the production process. friendly.
